Giving Back, and Enjoying It

by Sandie on April 17, 2008

On April 24th, fellow Kansas City-based writer and food blogger Kristen, of Dine and Dish, and I are teaming up to give back to the community. How? We’re attending the 12th Annual Forks & Corks event benefiting Harvesters–Kansas City’s only food bank and clearinghouse for the collection and distribution of food and related household products throughout the Greater Kansas City area.

In total, the Kansas City-based Harvesters network encompasses 550 not-for-profit organizations in 13 counties throughout Missouri and Kansas, and for the past eleven years, proceeds from Forks & Corks events have helped to bring nearly 1 million meals each year to fellow residents in need. As the Harvesters network continues to provide almost 60,000 emergency meals each week to area residents, is it as important as ever to support the needs of those in our community.

This year’s 12th Annual Forks & Corks is the largest ever and will feature food, wine and beverages from some of Kansas City’s finest and most popular establishments. Participating restaurants and beverage purveyors will provide a sampling of fine food, wine, specialty beers and coffee. For a list of area participants, click here.

If you are not a resident of the Greater Kansas City community, I urge you to support your own, local food bank by getting involved. There are many terrific programs and dedicated people working tirelessly to make this world a happier, less hungry planet, and there’s no better place to get started than your own back yard. Whether you’re capable of donating non-perishable food items, raising produce from your garden, donating money and/or attending charity events or even donating your time as a volunteer, do something—because 1 dollar, 1 can of food, or 1 person can make a difference.

This post warms my heart! First, because you and Kristen, both bloggers I adore, are getting together. Second, because you are getting together to give your time and your hearts to work for hunger relief in your own community. Wish I could join you — but I’ll be at home, baking for our own Drop In & Decorate Cookies for Donation event!

What a blast I had last night! :) Look forward to making this an annual thing… (and I am still stuffed!!)
Lydia makes doing what we actually did last night seem so noble ;) Nothing like stuffing yourself with food and wine to help the hungry. Seems like such an oxymoron!
